Jakob Friis Sorensen served as President Director of MAERSK Indonesia from 2006 to 2016. Born in 1966, he finished his study at A.P. Moller Shipping School, Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1989. His first job in shipping was General Manager (GM) of PT. Mercanindo Citra, which was aimed to start MAERSK Logistics Indonesia from scratch. After his successful milestone in Indonesia, he continued his journey to MAERSK Japan K.K as GM of International Sales MAERSK Line from 1992 to 1993 and as GM MAERSK Logistics from 1993 to 1995. That time, he saved MAERSK Logistics from the deficit and turned it into profitable business.
Jakob moved to MAERSK Line Copenhagen (Mediterranean – Far East) from 1995 to 1996 and subsequently practiced his specialty to save the collapsing MAERSK Logistics Malaysia from 1996 to 1999 (as GM Logistics). Before assigned back to Indonesia, he was delegated to manage MAERSK Logistics India Pvt.Ltd. as Managing Director (1999—2003) and to MAERSK Logistics Singapore Pvt.Ltd. as Director, Logistics Southeast Asia Area (2003—2006). He turned MAERSK India into profitable company and changed MAERSK Singapore from country-structure into functional organization.
Jakob participated in several trainings such as parachute jumping and first aid while he joined Danish Army, “Program for Executive Development” from Penn State University, Pennsylvania, USA, and IMD Managing Corporate Resources. In the midst of his high mobility, he made time to study and obtain MBA from Henly Management College (distance learning).
When asked to sum up his career, he shortly mentioned, “My tasks have always been ‘turn-around’ or establishment of organizations, picking the right team, establishing, and executing a business plan.”
